Treasure Cay, called Lovel's Island in records as far back as the 1780s, was once separated from the Abaco mainland by Carleton Creek. Over the years, however, landfill operations have joined the two, and the name Lovel's Island was replaced by Treasure Cay.
It now contains one of the most popular and elaborate resorts in the Out Islands. On the east coast of Great Abaco, it boasts not only 3 1/2 miles of private sandy beach, widely recognized as one of the top-10 beaches in the world, but also one of the finest marinas in the Commonwealth, with complete docking and charter facilities.
For golfing enthusiasts the Dick Wilson designed 18 hole, 72 par, 6,985 yards, Championship Treasure Cay Golf Course was rated "#1 Golf Course In The Bahamas" by Golf Digest (June 1999).
Before the tourist complex opened, the cay was virtually unsettled. As a result, the resort has become the "city," providing its visitors, who number in the thousands, with all the supplies they need, including medical goods, grocery store items (liquor, naturally), and even bank services.
Treasure Cay also hosts two of the most popular fishing tournaments in The Bahamas: the Treasure Cay Billfish Championship in April and the Treasure Cay Invitational in May.
